Considering maps

WQ came with loads of great room tiles, but it always bugged me that the rooms changed style as you progressed through a dungeon… but each dungeon had the same sort of *stuff*. Adding new rooms of the same quality required a degree of artistic talent that I lack (or at least don’t have the time to build up to).

I have loads of ideas for rooms and dungeons that I want to try running; from tight dungeons through to wide open caverns that could actually house those large, high level creatures that can spawn. Did it ever irritate you that large dragons and giants could spawn inside a small dungeon? Surely they would get stuck and die of starvation?

Many RPG GMs use a grid and draw their map onto it, so why can’t that work here too? I’ve converted one of our rooms into my office/gaming room with a 7×4 table, so I contacted Tiny Wargames and got them to make me a custom size of their Dungeon mat which came out quite reasonably priced. They seem to do a lot of custom work and don’t charge an awful lot on top of their standard mats. They offer cloth or mousemat as their options; given that I wanted to top it off with some Perspex sheet, I opted for the slightly cheaper cloth version. when it turned up I was really pleased with the results. The edges were nicely bound, the print nice and crisp and the cloth was flexible, but thick. All in all, very good quality; would buy from them again in a snap.

To get it onto the table, I did have to butcher it slightly by cutting it up… which in hindsight probably wasn’t the best plan in the world as the edges are a little frayed now. I should probably have ordered two slightly smaller mats as my table folds up. Still, the bits are now stuck to the table and some sheets of perspex will sit over the top, allowing me to draw whatever rooms I want over the dungeon floor with whiteboard pens.

Next step will be to recreate the core WQ room cards… and then create all the others that I wanted to try out!
