What’s this about?

I’ve always been a big fan of dungeon crawler games and have tried many over the years. Heroquest started it all, closely followed by Advanced Heroquest and Warhammer Quest. More recently Descent and Gloomhaven have picked up where the others left off… but nothing quite scratches that Warhammer Quest itch. Or at least that’s the memory… this blog is me trying to recreate that memorable game and expanding upon it in ways I wish it had gone.

Many others have done this in the past (as I did when it was still in the shops) and many, such as LittleMonk, still do to this day to great effect.

Over the years I’ve always been tempted to get back into Warhammer Quest, but always hit the stumbling block that the rules are long out of print and buying in to all of the monsters to fulfil every option on the original charts was an expensive job, especially since the Old World got blown up and various things stopped existing completely.

The original game, and community additions since, have always stuck to tables for generating events and monster spawns beyond some lower level card decks… but this could leave you with very random collections of creatures in the dungeons. Little Monk has done some great work in creating some tailored tables, but I want to take this further… and farther.

Recently I’ve been playing around with some ideas on building the set up from scratch, expanding it as I go with new rules, new monsters and a whole slew of new adventures. Given that I tend to run games solo, all of these updates will be tailored to my needs, but may well help others in their attempt to expand on a classic game.

To give a hint of things to come:

– Cards may not be designed to go with the original decks as usage may change, specifically for Event and Monster cards
– Everything will have a card
– Event cards will be tagged by type/category
– All cards will be numbered, allowing for quick selection for adventures

One of the limitations that I’ve come across is that at higher levels you just can’t fit all of the information for a group spawn onto a card and have it remain readable, so Monster cards will just list the types spawned and any unique rules. I’m undecided if rules will go onto reference cards, or what, but this may evolve over time. We shall see…

It is also important to note that as I have a collection of monsters and heroes from other miniature ranges as well as Old World Warhammer, this is my version of the world and will deviate from the known creatures and unit types as my whims see fit. You are free to ignore anything you don’t like!
